A peek at next-gen gaming
Last week at GDC updates were shown from both the Cryengine 3 (Crysis 2) and the Unreal Engine 3 (Gears of War 2). The keyword in the presentations was “Real-time”. This means that the scene is rendered by the hardware on the spot and not pre- rendered like most cut scenes in games nowadays.
The only problem is that you really need a badass system if you want to run it smoothly, that not many gamers can afford. The Unreal engine 3 demo for example used a 3x SLI GeForce GTX 580 computer rig. It will probably run on the PC you and I have, but only not very smoothly. However, we can still enjoy the videos that were released. (Tip: Watch fullscreen and 720p)
